Diary of an Amiga fanatic

Tag Archives: AmiSystemRestore

It was time to use my A1SE and OS4.0 on a more regular basis so that is exactly what I did. Trying out some utilities and demos I had a really great time. With the weather getting colder nothing beats using your Amiga’s. Currently I am trying some stuff out that might be used for my next article for the The Bucket Programming Corner section.

Suddenly I get a “Please insert volume CONSOLE: in any drive” error at random times. Not really sure what is causing this. At first I thought it could be AmiSystemRestore since I installed this recently but even when this is not running it still shows this error. The problem is that once this comes up the system will freeze up and I will have to restart the machine. I will do some more investigation in to this.

Earlier this week I tried out the new NetSurf 2.8 version. I like the download window so that I can see the download status of a file. I normally fire up OWB when browsing but since I installed NetSurf 2.8 I fire this puppy up when browsing the net. I am really starting to like it more each day I use it. Probably I only touched the surface of it and there is a lot more to discover.

For the last couple of weeks I am thinking about what my next project should me. I need something that would not take ages (I have very limited time so even the most simple projects would take ages) but can be done in a fair amount of time. I keep coming back to my already attempted file manager project. I kind of had it binned due to the ReAction issues I came across. After reading Trixie’s articles about ReAction over at OS4Coding.net I am going to give it another try. Since his articles show how it is suppose to be done, and showing what I did was wrong, I feel a new burst of energy to give it another try. Here’s to happy coding!

It has been a while since I posted a new column. Busy times but yet I managed to use my A1SE a bit. Your’s truly had, and still has, the great pleasure of beta testing AmiSystemRestore from Chris Handley. AmiSystemRestore will allow you to nearly undo any changes to the SYS: partition. Compare it to the Windows restore function. At first I ran in to some problems getting it started (error message) but Chris provided me with an updated version that works. To test it I used AmiUpdate from Simon Archer. AmiSystemRestore detects I am going to update and will do it’s job as you can see from the screenshots below. Of course I will do some more testing and leaving it running in the background for longer periods of time while I run other applications. But so far I am impressed by it.

Chris is also the author of another great utility called RunInUAE. Shame on you if you have not tried it yet. ūüôā

RunInUAE is intended to make it incredibly easy to run old Amiga games on Amiga OS4, and it comes with an easy installer, so that you can:

  • Run almost any HD installed 68k game (or program) inside E-UAE, by simply double-clicking on it! Including WHDLoad & JOTD JST installed games.
  • Run ADF & DMS games by double-clicking them. (Needs a little bit of manual set-up if you don’t have at least OS4.1 Update 1.) Otherwise just drag & drop them onto RunInUAE’s icon in AmiDock or it’s AppIcon.
  • Run CD32 & CDTV games from real or virtual CDs. (Compatibility is not great.)
  • The installer can set-up E-UAE with full-speed Sam-optimised settings. But it can also use your existing E-UAE settings if you want.
  • The installer will copy the necessary Kickstart ROMs off an Amiga Forever CD, if you don’t already have them installed.
  • You do¬†not¬†need to set-up any assignments, nor create or edit any cryptic scripts or config files, for it to work! (Unlike alternative solutions.)

This week ACube Systems revealed their AmigaOne 500. It retails for about a 1000 Euro which is somewhat on the expensive side.

The AmigaOne 500 is the complete, ready to run solution for all Amiga users.

Built around the well known Sam460ex, the AmigaOne 500 will let you run AmigaOS 4.1 straight out of the box. No need to look for and install peripherals, no need to hassle with software installation procedure. Just plug your monitor, keyboard and mouse and press the power button to enter into the world of AmigaOS.

Over at¬†OldSchoolGameBlog¬†you care read some more about this. You can say what you want about it (the price tag for example) but the fact remains that there is hardware being released and development going on. As always there is fair comment and the always slashing of any Amiga news on the forums. I guess that (slashing of any Amiga news) is probably the main reason I don’t visit the forums so much any more and just get my news from Amiga blogs and just check the RSS news feeds I subscribe too. It is strange that you got a group of people complaining there is nothing new coming out and once there is new stuff coming out it is rubbish. It does seem that group is getting the overhand in getting as much postings on forums. Again, I am not referring to the fair comments being posted but just the intention of posting nothing but negative stuff on forums. It will not prevent me from enjoying my Amiga experience but it is very annoying to see. Talking about Amiga¬†experience; I am off to play with my A1SE.

Due to all kinds of activities I have not been able to start working on my office. But I will start working on my office really soon now. I really need to start with it since I am out of a computer room now. The missus has started clearing it out and turning it into her hobby room. Lucky enough I was able to put up a fight and get some kind of agreement so I can still leave my A1SE in the room for now. As you can see from the picture there is not much male spirit left in that room.

I started a new section on the site called The Bucket List. A list of things a really really want to have. I will keep adding things to it since there is so much I still want to have. First to make the list is a PCMCIA network card for my A1200. I found one on AmigaKit which I might order. I just need to butter up Mrs W a bit so I can place the order. Seeing what happened to my computer room I believe I might get permission.

Also A-EON confirmed this week that the AmigaOne X1000 betatesters have been supplied with the latest version (update 3) of AmigaOS4.1 with their Nemo 2.1 motherboards. I am really considering to purchase Amiga OS4.1. I might do it together with the  PCMCIA network card for my A1200. Lately I see a lot of software released that will only run on OS4.1. I think it is time I upgrade.

Something I am really looking forward to is beta testing AmiSystemRestore from Chris Handley. I already have access to it but I was not able to give it a try earlier this week. It will have to happen this weekend. I will write about it in my next column.
