Diary of an Amiga fanatic

It is Monday the day after the AmiWest 2012 weekend so I am looking for news from the AmiWest show. I had some peeks during the weekend I noticed there was not much news coming from the show except a few announcements.

A-EON Technology announced that development has commenced of the Warp3D driver for RadeonHD graphics cards. The much awaited 3D support has been exclusively funded by A-EON and is aimed at customers who have recently purchased the new RadeonHD driver.

A more important (if you ask me) announcement was the Libre Office port exclusively funded by A-EON Technology. Libre Office is an open source office suite which descended from Open Office. Next to a good browser a Office package is what many users want. I already use Open Office on my Windows laptop so having the same package, or a descended, would be a great step forward. But such a project is a massive one and I wonder how fast they will be able to get this done. There was no news on how far the project had gone already or any indication when it might be ready.

The above two announcements I had spotted already during the weekend but the next one I missed but is a rather important announcement. ACube Systems announced Aros for the Sam460. My first thought was that this must be a Linux hosted version but no it is a native version of Aros. And soon they will have it available for all their boards. It was shown on AmiWest and they will also show it at the upcoming Pianeta Amiga in Italy (30 nov. 1-2 dec, 2012).

The above three announcements is pretty much it when it comes to news from AmiWest. No news on the netbook which is rather disappointed since it was announced at the last show and one year has passed without any news whatsoever. Surely you would release some info (even if it is news about it being delayed) since that is what people expected. Now I am waiting for all the footage they shot to become available.

You would almost forget that AmiWest is around the corner again. Edition 2012 is this coming weekend. Had to believe that a year has already passed again. It’s just now that I have been going through the stuff that is planned for this edition. I am pleased to see that Aros will make it’s way into AmiWest for the first time. Both Samuel Crow and Jason McMullan (from the UK) will be there as Aros representatives. Not sure if we will see some kind of presentation from them but it would be great if they did and if it would be recorded.

AmigaOne Netbook (www.amigax.com)

I am curious if we will hear some more news about the AmigaOne netbook. It seems there has not been any news about it since the last show. I don’t expect it to be available this year but I would love to hear some more news about it. I have to say that since I started to work with Aros I am following the OS4.x news a bit less. With not much time to spare I am using my free time wisely with Aros being at the top of my list.

I am in my first week of my holiday now and all that free time already resulted in a lot of writing for my blog. I did some game reviews which was a lot of fun. With my new Competition Pro USB joystick I am even more fired up to play and review games. It is just really great having all that free time. Even my column gets done and published in time. Having done some game reviews next up would be the programming bit again. Focussed on Aros I will be doing some more programming on Aros. I already did some research on Aros developing but there is still a lot more to learn. Time for some Aros coding.

Just like last week’s column I am again at my parents. Not sure if I will be able to write the whole column here but at least I will make a good head start on it. Still stored at my parents are my two Amiga SDK packages.

Amiga Software Development Kit

Two Amiga Software Development Kits

Remember when Amiga DE was the next big thing? These SDK’s would let you develop for it. The classic OS would be continued (PPC version running on yet to be released PPC hardware) and at a certain point cancelled and we would all switch to Amiga DE. It turns out that developing the classic OS further was the golden egg and Amiga DE the rotten egg. I guess being such an Amiga fan boy must have been the reason I bought two of these packages. And of course one of the packages contained the coupon with the discount for the to be released OS4. Now there’s a word, next to t-shirt, to get almost every Amiga fan jumping of his/her chair.

I was delighted to read about the AmigaOS4 Programming Seminar at AmiWest 2012. That is a seminar I really would love to attend. I hope we have some good stuff at AmiWest this year and of course a good audio and video feed. Hopefully some news regarding the netbook would announced at the show. For me this would be the next piece of Amiga hardware I would purchase. Personally I think it would be released at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. Of course I would love to be proven wrong.

I am having a hard time catching up with all the Amiga news that is coming out. New software releases for example or some show announcements like AmiWest 2012. I would love to see a weekly radio show discussing all the Amiga news from that week. Because I am on the road a lot I could just play it in the car or on my phone and don’t miss anything. And I would know what to check out once I am behind my computer and have some spare time.

I am no longer at my parents and most of the column was written at my own place. I am writing the end of it on my AmigaOne SE. It is a rainy Sunday afternoon so sitting behind my Amiga’s seems logical. If I can find a bit of time later on I will try to finish part 3 of my “ReAction – Opening a Window” tutorial. There is just a bit left to do so it should be possible. Of course I keep saying that for some time already. Time to get it done!
