Good old fun. That’s how I would describe Mikey Does the 80’s Again!!! (Take 2) show from Thursday 27-6-2013.
I had a great time and it was a real blast from the past. I talked about it before but when we still lived in Thailand I listened to Mikey’s show a lot. So this one brought back some really great memories. I hope he does another one (Christmas?) and for sure I will be tuning in.
Commando is a game that just won’t work with WinUAE. I had not upgraded to the latest version for some time but today I thought I would do so and while doing this I thought it might be a good idea to try Commando again. And what a surprise it was that it worked. So far I just tried the first bit of the game so it could be it fails later on in the game. This type of game is really my favorite. Sadly the C64 had more of these type games compared to the Amiga. I use the word sadly not to offend the C64 but for the fact I had no C64.
So far I posted two articles that contained video(s). One was about Licence to Kill and the other about Run the Gauntlet. I will use it more often as it gives the articles that extra touch of greatness. I am already working on a new article which will include a video that will just give it that extra bit. You will see.
Trevor posted a new article on his blog in which he talks about the Silicon Dreams/VCF 2013 (UK tech show) taking place on 5-7 July 2013. They hope to show a few interesting things but no promises. I will keep an eye on the this next weekend and hopefully we do get to hear about some interesting things.
A couple of degrees below zero on this Sunday afternoon so that can only mean one thing, Amiga! I tried for some time already but I am unable to get Commando to work on WinUAE. It crashes a while after the title screen appears. From what I remember reading on the internet it has to do with the sound. Did anyone get Commando to work on WinUAE? If so could let me know the settings you are using?
When I transfer files between my laptop and A1SE I use a FTP server on my laptop and a FTP client on my A1SE. This is how I transfer files since there is no FTP server on OS4.1. But now A-FTP Server has been released for OS4.1. My first attempt to transfer files was successful. Not only could I transfer files it also did not freeze or crash. Surely it will happen sometimes but that is just my combination of A1SE and OS4.1. I give it to thumbs up and this will be a for sure my most used utility of this year
I have had some playtime with my A1SE and OS4.1 this Sunday afternoon. For some reason XAMOS does not really work on my setup. It displays output as it should but not executing the code it was started with.
Fast forward to Saturday, still cold and lot’s of snow outside, so what better time to have another go at XAMOS. Sadly I had no time since last Sunday but with a new weekend amongst us I have some time to get XAMOS to work. It seems to freeze the whole machine when I run it. I got Snoopy running but because it freezes I can’t get the log. I guess I have to look a bit further into this.
I came across another great podcast called Retro Gaming Roundup. I am in the middle of RoundUp 55 and so far I am loving it. I have added the soundcard back into my A1SE so I got sound again. First time I heard the OS4.1 startup sound. I forgot about it but I had my boxes on when to my surprise I heard the sound. Time to play around a bit more with OS4.1 while I still have time for it.
Because my 1084 monitor broke down I had to come up with a alternative solution to be able to keep using my A1200. The choice was to use a television set I had left over. To test it I played Commando on it. This is really a game that is unplayable unless you use a trainer version. But it did gave me a C64 feeling and with the trainer I kept trying for some time
I could not help thinking about the time I played similar games like this on a C64. I really like the top down view of these kind of war games. Here’s a list of some of my favourite top down view war games.
Everyone has played Ikari Warriors at some stage. How about the two player mode?
Another favourite of mine, Rambo III. I wish they had created a game from part 1 and 2 as well.
Another classic, Dogs of War. “TIMBO F5”, anyone?
Leatherneck also has a two player mode giving you many hours of fun.
If you know some more of these kind of games let me know. There are more I can list here but that would make it a “never ending” list. We can debate for a long time if most of these games are any good at all. But for sure these are my favourite type of games.
I managed to finish and publish part 2 of “ReAction – Opening a Window”. I will start work on part 3 shortly. The weather has been extremely warm lately so I did not use my Amiga’s a lot.
